I complimented someone as being 'muy chic' the other day.
So, my question to you is... Is that Spench? Or Franish?

Awwwww! The very last day of Fall Fashion Week! Sniffle!
It's okay though... I'm so behind in commenting, it'll still feel like Fall Fashion Week for a few more days at least.  The only difference will be the extra hour I'll get each morning as I go back to wearing PJs 24/7.  Just kidding.  Kinda.

Yup, no smiles today...  but not cuz I'm not overjoyed, I assure you.
The smile photos just looked ... off.

dress - idle hands (santa cruz)
hoodie - bunny's (santa cruz)

 It's a real shell!
this has a sweet note from my madre inside

First off, I wanted to thank Emery for hosting this week.  I know it's a lot of work and I really appreciate it.  Fashion Weeks not only result in me taking the time to dress a little nicer but more importantly, to notice the beauty in those around me.
Lastly, I wanted to thank YOU GUYS.  The sweet comments made my world go round.
I've loved finding inspiration in all your beautiful ensembles and even better, finding all these new people to follow.

Awkward / Awesome Volume 17 + Fall Fashion Week

For those of you who are new to my blog, on Thursdays I post the awkward & awesome things that have happened in my week....

Awesome: Finding out that our apartment services include stocking our toilet paper for the year.
Awkward: Discovering this after we bought a year's worth of toilet paper from Costco.

Awesome: Being friends with (most) of my exes.
Awkward: Having one of them ask me if my dad would be their wedding photographer.
I don't know if it's more awkward that he didn't ask me or that he asked a family member of mine in the first place....

Awesome: Being invited to play softball with my coworker.
Awkward: Not having picked up a bat in 10 + years
Awesome: Getting a run, first time at bat.
Awkward: Striking out every time after that...

Awesome: Fall Fashion Week!
Awkward: Taking photos of it.
Awkward x 2: Having your coworkers discover your blog during Fall Fashion Week.

Awkward: Having fruit flies.
Awesome: Each time we put the trash into the under the sink, the apartment cleaners bring us a new one cuz they can't find ours.
Gotta collect 'em all!

Awesome: Getting to go to a Garfunkel and Oates concert for free (cuz my housemate rules)
Awesome x 2: Getting to be the photographer for the show at the last minute!

Annnd onto today's outfit...

skirt - wet seal?

I can't wait to catch up how adorable
the rest of you are today (here)!

Don't Eat the Cantaloupe

Happy Day 5 of Fall Fashion Week!

Aside from the fact that cantaloupes (a staple of my diet) are now people-killing vessels, and despite yesterday's incident (thanks for the support on that, btw.), I'm in a really good mood.
So far, classes = 3 thumbs up.
(If I'm so clumsy I have two left feet, I figure I'm awkward enough to have at least 3 thumbs.)

I'm off to tour a lab so I felt like I should dress a bit more profesh.

shirt - ?
undershirt - wet seal
necklace - taken from madre
bracelet - from a little shop near where we go camping
skirt - thrifted
shoes - target

As always, I can't thank you enough for all the sweet, lovely comments that make my day (and week, and month).  It really makes a positive difference in my mood and how I react to situations and the whole works.

Make sure to check out what everyone else is wearing here!

As of today, I discovered google has a new feature where you can do an image search (just drag an image into the search bar and it'll find similar ones).
Real cool, right?
Not so much when your new cohorts are taking turns looking up people in the department and your face is searched and your top secret blog is the first bajillion hits and you look like the most narcissistic person ever cuz it's the middle of fashion week.

Le sigh.

Springish Fall

I can't believe it's already day 4 of Fall Fashion Week!
So, today's outfit theme was take THAT, Fall!
I love living in (this part of) California because I can dress like it's spring.
Not to brag too much... I did some time in upstate New York.

skirt - wet seal
shoes - target
hat - therapy
shirt - wet seal
sweater - bunny's (in santa cruz)

Happy Tuesday!
Check out the other lovely ladies here!

**Full disclaimer: I may or may not have changed into jeans for fear of being that overdressed weirdo on the first day of classes***

Shark Day....

This is my Monday face, in case you were wondering....
 Yup, it's here...

I tossed and turned a lot last night so I'm having what I've dubbed a 'shark day*'... I'm fine as long as I keep moving...
*Have you ever heard that sharks have to keep moving to stay alive?  I'm not sure if it's true or not..

You know what makes me feel better on shark days? Dressing up fancier than normal.
You know what makes me feel AMAZING on ANY day?
All your wonderful, sweet comments.
 hoodie - bunny's (santa cruz)
boots - target
dress - crossroads thrift store
shirt - f21
earrings - f21 (picked out by the littles!)

Thank you guys sooooooo much.  Seriously.  The past 2 days just gave my ego a boost for the year.  Keep this up and my head wont fit into the cute hats I have for winter.

Fall Fashion Week - Day 2

Ohmygoodness, how I love Fashion Week! Day one already got me super inspired AND filled with warm fuzzies from all the kind words.  It's everything I had hoped for the week all in the first day!
All thanks to you guys...

As if it couldn't get better....
FIRST my superfantabulousawesome housemate won tickets for any show she wanted.
THEN she chose Garfunkel and Oates cuz she knew I loved them (and gave her plus one to me!).
THEN she let me know the venue was looking for photographers.
THEN I called and they just happened to be in need of one for the show!
Commence squealing and jumping around apartment.

Here's what I'm wearing today...

dress - gifted from madre (from athleta)
boots - gifted from madre (from aldo)

Awkward / Awesome Volume 16

Awkward: Remember how I couldn't stop waking at 4am out of excitement?
Now I can't stop waking at 4am out of habit...

Awesome: My housemate and my accidental color-scheme theme....

Awesome: Being pro-active and dropping off my computer to get all sorts of goodies installed.
Awkward: When I went to pick it up, they were just screwing closed the bottom.  They'd had to vacuum a mass amount of dog hair out of it before they could even start to do anything else.

Awesome: Living 4 minutes from a self-serve froyo place.
Awkward: Having it 4 days in a row.

Awesome: Having a post-apocolyptic movie night, complete with a bed sheet fort and flashlights.

Awkward: NEEDING a haircut like no man's business but having money and not being within 450 miles of my usual hairdresser.
Awesome: Finding $40(!) and a local barber who I thought did a pretty decent job.
Awkward: No one said a thing.  It's not that I was expecting to roll in admirations but it felt odd not even getting the standard (non-complimentary), "You got your haircut!"  People looked at me, my hair, then away (adhering, I assume, to the ol' "if you don't have anything nice to say..." adage).

Awesome: I love my new cohort so much, I have dreams of us just hanging out and belly laughing.
Awkward: I wake myself up laughing.  At 4am.  Of course.

Awesome: Having super fast internet.
Awkward: ...for one week before the undergrads showed up.

Awesome: Having someone email me about the bean bag I was selling on Craig's List.
Awkward: His phrasing.  "Email me.  I NEED your bean bag."
Wrong dude, no one NEEDS a bean bag.

Awkward: Coveting my housemates ever-ripening bananas (the riper, the better they are for freezing).
Awesome: They started to attract fruit flies, giving me an excuse to offer to buy 'em off of her.
Awkward: They were mine all along.
Remember how my housemate is cleaner than me?  Now add dog-hair filled laptop and fruit flies to my list of gross.

How about you guys?
Dish your awkwards and awesomes in the comments below!

Brain Droppings - vol 9

As a klutz, I'm no stranger to the cycle of banging an errant limb but until it was pointed out to me, I never wondered why I would grab my own hurt part yet shrink in terror from someone else touching me.

Like, when I bang my shin I immediately grab my leg and (if it's not bleeding) rub it to make it feel better but would never want someone else to do either to my soon-to-be bruise.
No one knows for sure why we do this but one current theory is that when we unite two parts of the same body, we're giving increasing the coherence of the brain's body map.  A.K.A. Giving more information to your brain (which is freaking out) about the level of damage and hurt.

Basically saying, "See! It's not so bad!"  This theory is supported by other studies showing that people experienced less pain as soon as they were able to look at the injured spot.  You don't get that extra info from someone else's touch and they may make the injury worse by touching it.  Lastly, obviously, grabbing the damaged area may protect against further injury (if you're losing blood or something's biting you, etc).

Sorry for the blog absence... it's been a heck of a week (in the best possible way).
Um, can I gush?

Apartment? BEAUTIFUL! It's giant, clean, comfortable, close to EVERYTHING... (Pictures below).
Apartment-mate? FANTASTIC! She's clean, respectful, easy going but lets me know when she does have a preference.
Advisor/mentor? My new favorite woman.  She's easy to talk to, incredibly smart, full of energy and extremely supportive.  Oh and a freakin' genius.  I'm going to a let's-make-personal-crests-to-decorate our-lab-with party at her house tonight.  Adorbs.
The program? Inspiring.... Full of amazing, creative and intelligent people.

I'm rolling in happy.

Here's my room before...
And after....
Standing on my desk...

Like The Princess and the Pea except without the pea.
When I close my closet door, this is what I see

My GIANT closet...

Here's the rest of the apartment...

The living room

Standing in the kitchen...

Our sweet bathroom set up...

We have SOOOOO much storage space, it's kinda ridiculous.
Here's just ONE closet...
(We put the coffee table that was already here plus some of the sections of the couch in it).

Now that I've got some semblance of a routine, I'm excited to catch up in blogland and I can't WAIT for Fall Fashion Week! It starts next Saturday! Eeep!

Are you guys up to anything fun this weekend?
Participating in Fashion Week?

Awkward / Awesome Volume 15

Awkward and Awesome: Being SO incredibly excited I have been waking up every day at 4am.
Just awkward: Being SO incredibly excited I constantly have, "Time of My Life" playing nonstop in my head.

Awesome: Getting here first on move-in day
Awkward: Not wanting to take the better of the 2 rooms in my apartment
Awesome: Finding out the rooms are assigned.
Awkward: Moving into the wrong one.
Oh... Um... Hi for the first time, new housemate!  You're right... I did move into the wrong room. Allow me to just run back-and-forth 30 times with armfuls of stuff while you're waiting.

Awkward: Moving into an already furnished apartment.
I already HAVE my own stuff....
Awkward x 2: Moving into an already furnished-for-TWO room.
Yup... I have 2 beds, 2 desks, 2 dressers, 2 chairs, 2 trash cans....

Awesome: My dad and brother driving my stuff (quite a long ways) to me in a Uhaul.
You guys are the best!
Awkward: Being the ONLY person moving in with a Uhaul.

Awesome: Having a really clean housemate.
Awkward: Having her be cleaner than me in EVERY way
Her: We should coordinate what time we each take our showers tomorrow.
Me: Oh, no, don't worry about it... you can takes yours whenever.
Her: No, really! I don't want to overlap... What time were you gonna shower?
Me: Um... Well, I showered today so...
Her: .....

Awesome: Being invited out to beer and tacos by some upperclassmen.
Awkward: Bringing along ALL the other first years
We travel in packs, didn'tja know?

Awkward: Following a boy into the bathroom yelling, "Are you going up?"
Note to self: The elevator is the NEXT door down.

Awesome: Seeing a familiar face at orientation.
Awkward: Having that face belong to an old friend that I had a slow, purposeful, drift away from.

Awesome: Receiving a stipend.
Awkward: Not being paid until November.
Um... rent? Car payment? Food? I guess I don't need those...

Awesome: Sneaking out of orientation with a few of my cohorts after boring speech #3
Awkward: Having this big, middle-aged lady literally stick her arms and legs out and crab walking back and forth trying to stop us hissing, "Orientation's not over! Orientation's not over!"

Awesome: My advisor taking me out to lunch.
Awkward: She didn't know not to take a grad student to a buffet.
"Allow me to load up on EVERYTHING."
Awkward x 2: She actually wanted to talk and stuff.
"It's hard to eat everything on my plate AND talk..."

Awkward x 4: After being introduced to a rather young looking gentleman, I asked my advisor quietly if he was a professor or post doc, etc.  She said, "Didja hear that so-and-so? Rachael just told me you look TWELVE!"
Doo doo doo... great first impressions... doo doo doo!

Awkward / Awesome Volume 14

Awesome: Hugs.
Awesome x 2: Multiple hugs.
Awkward: Multiple hugs in 100 degree weather.
I had to give each  person permission to wipe their palms after touching my sweaty self.

Awkward: Texting the someone else when I meant to text my mom.
Charlotte learned what each sister had eaten, which one had showered and which was currently practicing their instrument.

Awkward AND Awesome: Being followed around by our camping family's 11 year old son, who seems to be quite fond of me.
Just awkward: Being followed to our outdoor (read: no walls) potty.

Awesome: Finally discovering the cause of my nighttime, benadryl-requiring allergies.
Awkward: Finding out the culprit is down feathers (I'll miss you, comfy eiderdown blanket).

Awkward: My new car still smells like someone tried to cover up something with air freshener.
Awkward x 2: Explaining to my sisters that we'd just have to tough it out, that fighting smells with other smells just equals TWO smells.
Awkward x 3: Shortly thereafter spilling a mound of garlic powder in the front seat.

I can't freakin' wait!
More info here.

Awkward: Because of the lack of reception while camping, when I did get a rare patch, I sent texts in batches (thinking it was easier for two short ones to get out vs. one long one???).  Often the follow up texts didn't make it.
Friend: Call me when you're back!
Me: I wont have time...
Me: hang out much because I'll be packing...
Me: ...but I'd love for you to stop by while I'm sorting things!
Friend: Call me when you're back!
Me: I wont have time...
[aaaand reception died]

Awesome: Being invited to dinner.
Awkward: Being served a 'mostly' vegetarian lasagne.
Host: There's only a little bit of ham in it!
Me: Yeah... I'm full-blooded vegetarian, so....
Awesome: Finding out they didn't know of my dietary restrictions, thus, weren't offended when I skipped over the proffered dish.

Awesome: Having an internal clock that allows me to wake naturally at 7 am every single day.
Awkward: ... Even when I fell asleep at 2 am after driving 15.5 hours.  Curse you internal clock.
Awesome: Drive through coffee places!  Hello PJs and unkempt hair! Here's a visual.
Awkward: Being called and asked to get a gallon of milk on the way home.
Where's my drive through grocery store?

Awkward: My conversation with my littlest sister this morning...
Littlest little: When are you moving out?
Me: Tomorrow morning.  Super early.  Probably before you're awake.
Littlest little: ....Well... bye!

Awesome: Getting to see Faja and Brutharrr tomorrow when they bring my stuff and help me move into my new place!!!

Faraway Land - Tuesday September 6th, 2011

Left campsite at 10am.
Stopped only for gas and to pick up food for eating within the confines of the car.
Arrived home at 1:30am.

I'm sorry for what I put you through, right gluteus maximus...
I hope I never have to do that to you again.

Thank you, Brutharrrr, for your excellent taste in music and for supplying said music to me.

Faraway Land - Sunday and Monday (September 4th & 5th)

Sunday morning, the wand shop was open for business...

Then we took our camping friends to the lake for some fishin'!
Bigger little spent the whole time on the lake with her papa.
*Not pictured: She took on the back rowing position! She's getting strong.

I'm not so much into the dead fish aspect of this as I am the water droplets falling off...

Littlest little and I played 'drawing lessons' together.
 Isn't she adorable?

This is my stepdad's face when Littlest little asked him to
bring back a fish that was a quarter size of the canoe.
"Yeah, no."

Lacking a zoom lens, I tried to utilize binoculars to
capture a picture of the bald eagle we saw.
Not so much...

Monday, we packed and tried to enjoy the last day on the property.
The burners came back through town (the 'exodus'), so in the afternoon I hung around town making friends and taking pictures (but I'd feel weird putting their pictures on here without them knowing).
