Datey date date

A few of you have asked for details about my recent dates.  I have this weird sense that I shouldn't tell you guys too much until I know if it's serious.   Like I'm a divorced mom and you're my kids that I don't want to get attached to potential beaus before they check out.  But that's silly.  And it's a good story, so here goes....
This photo is not from my date night but it's essentially the same outfit so....

First off, it was way cool of him to ask me if I had any dietary restrictions (which I do, being a vegetarian and all).  Even cooler was that he then took me out for sausages.  Yes, sausages. Apparently he knew about a restaurant that makes amazing vegetarian sausages.  Let me tell you, it's a MAJOR plus to find someone who doesn't go, "Oh... vegetarian?  That means, like, you only eat lettuce, right?"  Secondly, despite it being a chilly night in the city, he took me out for ice cream after.  Not only do I not have any problems eating hot food in hot weather or cold food in cold weather, I actually like ice cream when it's cold out.  So, all around good date #1.

For the second date, I took him to sushi.  He ordered all vegetarian so we could share (swoon).  Afterwards, we went to this cool saloon-y place I'd be wanting to check out for months (but not by myself).  We played went through all of the songs on the jukebox, sharing our pasts through the music that defined it and singing along to our selections.  Good date #2.
I like what I know of him so far, but I don't know much after two dates so I'm trying very hard to keep a level head about it.  It's just so fun to have a crush! :)

That's in real life on purpose.  So I've met a blogger I followed and met a blogger who read my blog but never purposely met a blogger, let alone one who I both followed and was followed by.  Got it?
A few days ago, I got to finally hang out with the lovely Katie (formerly of Life Of Piefairy and currently of Doctors Terry).  Katie kindly played hostess and showed me around Berkeley.  We ended up going to Buffalo Exchange and both had success with acquiring some items for Winter Fashion Week. :)

It was a lot of fun to meet a fellow blogger but what a weird situation!  It felt like a cross between a blind-date, a job interview and a brush with a celebrity.  I found myself stressing the night before about what to wear (normally, when meeting someone new, they have no idea of what outfits I've worn before), knowing odd little facts about this person without a unified whole and composing what to write about the meeting in my head afterwards.  Haha!  But in all seriousness, Katie was everything you would have expected and hoped she would be from reading her blog- smart, interesting and beautiful.  Just look at how darling she is in this alice-in-wonderland dress she tried on...

(I wish I had my other lens so you
could see the whole dress but it
was missing that day)

Afterwards, I dashed off for cappuccinos with another Berkeley-ite and then dinner with my mom, brother, step-dad and the littles.  All in all, a wonderful day.

How's your Christmas break going?  Or are you already back to the grind?

Merry Christmas!

I'm 50% deeply ashamed and 50% incredibly proud of myself... Anticipating the temporary closure of all my caffeine suppliers on this most merry of Christmases, I got myself an extra latte yesterday and fridged it.  Is it horrible that I'm addicted to caffeine and that regular coffee gives me a awful stomach-ache?  Indubitably.  But as I sit here sipping my warm, delicious latte, I have no regrets.

This is what I'm wearing to go visit my family in Petaluma.
dress - charlotte russe
tights - target
boots - aldo
shirt - h&m
flower - h&m
This is my dad playing with his new toy....
I'm sure there will be many more photos yet to come.
Merry Christmas everyone! What are your holiday plans today?

What a whirlwind the past few days have been!  I worked until Wednesday evening, then on Thursday morning I killed two birds with one stone by combining a family friend's very generous offer to teach Dad and I portrait lighting techniques with an old schoolmate's request for headshots.  She modeled, Dad and I learned, it was fantastic.  Here are some outtakes (there will be definitely be more when I get time to go through them).

Yesterday evening was date #2.  This is what I wore.
Weirdly, our waitress and I kinda matched...

I did not have access to my computer for much of today... such a weird feeling.  I wasn't as productive craft-wise as I would've thought internet deprivation would make me buuuut, I don't feel THAT bad for having a lazy day. ;) And I mean SUPER lazy.  I may or may not have stayed in my pajamas and watched Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.  Twice. In a row.
I'll never tell.

My weekend in pictures

Thursday night (hey, Thursday is almost the weekend right?), I made dinner for my dear friend.  This is what we ate:
It's one of my recent creations.

Friday morning, I had a meet-and-greet interview-y thing for graduate school.  Nothing super official but definitely important for my future.  This is what I wore...
dress - h&m
tights - gap
shoes - target
flower - f21
Friday evening was our company's holiday party.  I wore the yellow dress from a few posts back.  I loved ALL your suggestions, especially Deborah's idea to have a sparkly sash.  Unfortunately, the yellow sash was built in and I did not have time to find sparkly material but I ended up going with maroon tights and was quite happy with the result.  However, I don't have an outfit photo where I didn't look like a goon, so no pictures for you guys.  Sawwy.

On Saturday, I went to my friend's fancy christmas cocktail party.  This is what I wore.
dress - h&m
tights - target
shoes - target
jacket - charlotte russe
flower- f21
(Proooobably could've used some ironing but it didn't
look so bad when there wasn't a camera flash on it....)

Today, I got to see one of my very best friends and meet his new, wonderful boyfriend.

And.... Tomorrow, I have a date!

I hope you guys had a great weekend too! What did you do?
Photo cred: Thanks to Steven, Brutharrr and Dad for taking these pictures!

I found this dress at a thrift store (score!) and want to wear it to my work's holiday party tomorrow but would like to make it more Christmas/winter like... Any suggestions?  Someone told me I add a tiny shrug or jacket.

What do you guys think?

*****EDIT******: Thanks for your suggestions so far!!! Keep 'em coming.  I specifically need help on the color.  With most dresses, I throw on black tights and black shoes.  But if I did that here, I'd look like a bumble bee!  What color tights/shrug/cardigan/tiny jacket/scarf, etc would go with yellow?

Dirty Hair Halo

I stumbed upon Shannon's blog, Dirty Hair Halo the other day and was floored by this post-Thanksgiving outfit.

I know, right!? She's got style....

Anyways, I just HAD to recreate it....

I don't know what's happening with my hair there but speaking of things that are weird... Dear California winter, you look like fall.

P.S. These photos were taken by my dad, who I'm sure would want me to say that he got plenty of non-blown-out shots.  I just happened to like the look of some of the ones that were tests.

I love you Mr. Internets

Today, I got recognized.  From this blog.  It was absolutely surreal.  And here I thought it was strange enough when I recognized someone else.  Apparently, this friend and follower of Chelsea (from Three Birds) works down the street from me (and must be very good with faces)!

World wide web magic #2: Back in high school- the heyday of my thrifting- my favorite things to find were the ones that people may or may not have meant to give away.... scrapbooks and wallets and the like.  I always pictured finding these people to return what I assumed were very misplaced treasures (there were tears and hugs involved).  BUT, this was back in the day when the computer was known as TheMachineThatMakesMyHomeworkNeater.
So, as I was digging through my treasure chest this weekend, I came across one such wallet and it (finally) occurred to me that I could use good ol' facebook to track down this mysterious stranger.  A few messages back and forth and now the wallet will be reunited with it's long lost owner.

Pretty nifty, Mr. Internets... pretty nifty.

Bachelor Omelettes

Coincidentally, I came across compost cookies today, which bear a striking resemblance to my bachelor-omelettes.

Oddly, only of the ingredients listed above was a mistake and it just happens to be a purposeful addition to the cookies...

Too much information

It's been one of those weeks--- Ah, who am I kidding, TWO weeks--- where groceries, laundry and bathing get put on the back burner.  T.M.I.? Probably so.
'Why?' you might ask (if this were an actual conversation instead of just me talking at you).

Three little words, three massive time suckers.  With the GRE over, my attention shifted to turning in the first round of apps and submitting my very first abstract!!!
If you're fortunate enough to not be indoctrinated into academia jargon (just kidding, I love you science.  We're cool, right?), an abstract is a brief summary of a scientific paper.  Or, in my case, the gist of what I intend to talk about at an upcoming conference (which will ultimately be made into my first published paper).  How exciting is that?!  (Now, when do I actually start feeling like a scientist? Anyone?)

In other cool news, yesterday I won something!  A $100 gift basket from this store near my work.  A vitamin store... Hahaha! Now I gotta get sick so I can enjoy it!
Though, after the go-go-go pace of the past month, I have a feeling that wont be a problem....

(I slept so hard last night, I bruised my face with my hand).

Annnd, last but certainly not least of the good newses, my brother's December mix is up!  I've been rockin' it at work (cuz he burns a copy and mails it to anyone who wants it FOR FREE).

Tit for Tat...

You see, Phoebe takes Buster's bed:

So Buster takes Phoebe's bed:
I think he got the short straw here.

This is not a black and white photo.... was a black and white day!

It's starting to get California cold....  As in 55 degrees (brrr!).
All the rain has been driving me indoors to blankets, lattes and music.  When I'm not rocking out to the newest mix by my awesome brother, I've been listening to Call It Off by Tegan and Sara and The Leave Behind by Jeremy Larson.  On repeat.

So tell me, what should I put in my ears when it's cold outside?  What does YOUR winter playlist look like?
P.S. Treadmills! Who knew there were so many types?

Stomach. Hurts.

I am most definitely wearing my most gorge-tastic outfit today.
This Thanksgiving is special... it's the very first time I've ever cooked for a holiday!  Whenever this fact has been mentioned in the past few weeks, people usually mistakenly thought I meant the turkey.  This seemed like an especially bad idea because, seeing as I have never eaten meat, I'm pretty sure I'd do it wrong and make people sick.  Like, salmonella sick not just bad-cooking sick.
Anyhoo, I made two non-turkey dishes today...
Pear, Mushroom and Pomegrante Stuffing With Onions, Sage and Thyme...

Mashed Rosemary and Garlic Potatoes With Onions....

The ingredients (minus the beans - I didn't end up using those)....

Sautéing the mushrooms, onions, sage and thyme...

Added the pomegranate juice and bread....

So..... against all logic, I picked another dish I'd never eaten...  At least, as far as my memory serves, I've never had stuffing.  After I pulled it out of the oven, I was asking my dad what to do with all the extra juice at which point I was gently told that stuffing should be generally dry.  Durn....

Note to self: skipping lunch doesn't allow you to eat more.... my stomach shrinks.  Oops.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sunol Regional Wilderness... a beautiful place.

Especially for photos.

Especially if your friend should quit her job and be a model.

10 Cute things, just cuz.

1) 'Cuddle class' seating on airlines?  Darling!

2) I know what I want for christmas.... A tiny toaster necklace!!

(Oh, you didn't know I'm obsessed with
tiny things and toasters?
Well, now you do.)

3. This amazing husband catered to his preggers wife's super-restricted-diet by making fun scenes out of her bland food every day!

4. Video chatting with the littles

5. My brother showed me this last week.... Seriously?!  A dog that puts its dish into the dishwasher, who can clean windows and help you take off your hoodie?  It can close and open doors, put trash in the trash and clothes in the washer and more! {I sound like an ad...}

6. Cute word verification:

7. If you haven't seen this cute, confused little lamb, I suggest it:

8. Cute wet puppy!!!!

9. Cute latte!!!

 10. Cute flashback (my brother and I)

EDIT: I just HAD to add a #11....
This story about a bomb scare
turning out to be a
box of kittens!

P.S. Cool, but not cute:
Epic bed....

So, I'm a bit frustrated... I only get 4 timed practice tests online with the book I bought and during this 3rd one, my internet cut out when I had 5 minutes left so my math 'score' is way off and not helpful at all.
Anyways, as promised, here's pictures of the hair (and my comfy, non-matching, laze-about-the-house, laundry-day outfit).
Well, hmm.
You'll have to take my
word for it...
It is much redder in person.

I'm halfway between panic and apathy.  You know that feeling? It's kinda awful.

Any last minute advice?  I'd sure appreciate it!

Sunday, November 7, 2010

I'm fairly certain that in the past two days I've negated all money saved as a result of a month of home-made lattes in the process of cramming.  I've blown my paycheck on buttery croissants, foamy lattes and exorbitantly priced veggie burgers as I spend hour after hour in preparation for taking the GRE on Tuesday.

To be more specific (and answer your question Katie), I should say I'm retaking the GRE on Tuesday.  I took it last year (and scored well enough and got into grad school and moved to upstate New York and came back to California and.... well, that's a whole 'nother story).  But last time, after a cursory glance at the math topics covered,  I thought, 'Pish posh! I remember all that!'
Resultantly, I never took a timed practice test.
Needless to say, it came down to 3 minutes in which to do 17 (out of 28) questions (GRE = 1.  Rachael = 0.  It pretty much kicked my butt).
I am hoping I can score better this time....

P.S. Dyed my hair. Pictures soon.

Thursday, November 4, 2010

Well, this post is quite late but I thought I'd share our fun trick-or-treating night.
The littles were so cute....
'Spunky witch' and Hermione (from Harry Potter)

We did blondie's hair in braids beforehand so it would be nice and frizzy...

Look at those luscious locks!

Don't let their costumes fool you... they were actually both little angels! They politely thanked everyone after receiving candy, did NOT walk on people's lawns and get this- they didn't eat any candy!  Not without prompting at least.  I felt like the classic devil on the shoulder....
Me: Okay, how many pieces have you eaten so far.
Little: None!
Me: What? Why not?
Little: I want to make sure I pick a good one for my one treat.
Me: No, no, go ahead... you can have more than one tonight.
Little: Well then, I'd like to make sure my two pieces are my favorites.
Me: I'll let you have more than two pieces if you'll just eat one now!
(I always thought that was the fun of Halloween.... walking around, eating candy whilst you go (in moderation of course)).
Here's the kicker: at 7:30, they both said they felt like their bags were full enough and they would like to go get some sleep now! Wha??!
Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture where
more than one person looked good...

I hope everyone else had a wonderful Halloween (and by the looks of several of your posts, you did!).

P.S. The next day, I got a ride to the airport, flew on a plane, took a shuttle to BART, took BART to a bus and bused myself to work.  I got in roughly an hour later than a 'normal' day.  Crossed the whole state in a morning... Amazing, huh?!
